Enclosure Design and Certification

GSE assisted with the design and certification of a permanent total enclosure (PTE) around the knife over roll coating head. The client wanted grove to ensure that the design met the definition of a PTE in accordance with USEPA Method 204. Additionally, to confirm that the design was set so the booth would also meet the 5 criteria of US EPA Method 204.
In pursuit of this, GSE:
- Conducted a site visit and plan review which consisted of:
- A site visit to observe the pilot coater in operation.
- Confirmation of the operational requirements for operator's access to the enclosure.
- Verification of the dimensional measurements of the coating head, coating pump system, proximity to web feed and oven entrance relative to the overall coating room.
- Presentation of several enclosure options to client with pros and cons for each choice.
- Calculation of the required airflow to place the enclosure under negative pressure to meet the PTE requirements.
- Preparation of plans for the enclosure option chosen.
- Analysis and calculation using the supplied CAD/SolidWorks layout to verify that the presented PTE will meet US EPA Method 204 requirements.
- Recommendations based on the analysis to satisfy US EPA Method 204 requirements.
Once the enclosure was constructed, grove tested the enclosure using EPA Method 204 criteria for certifying permanent total enclosures. To accomplish this GSE:
- Verified that the dimensions of the PTE met the requirements as set forth in the design.
- Measured the dimensions of each natural draft opening (NDO).
- Measured the airflow through each of the NDO using a calibrated digital manometer.
- Prepared calculations and a certification that the PTE met the requirements of US EPA Method 204.
