Mold Bioamplification Assessment

GSE was contracted by the American Automobile Association (AAA) to preform a limited indoor air quality monitoring service to evaluate the indoor work environment of AAA headquaters building located in Heathrow Florida with respect to mold bioamplification. These services were performed as a part of a response to employee concerns in a limited number of areas.
In pursuit of this, GSE:
- Conducted a walk-through of the target areas of the facility to observe the general operating conditions.
- Collected a quantitative total (viable and non viable) of bioaerosol samples from the three monitored areas (plus comparative outside samples) utilizing spore traps.
- Analyzed the collected samples using an American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) certified laboratory. The data was expressed as count per meter cubed.
- Prepared a written report with conclusions at the completion of the project.
The aeromycology data indicated that the indoor air did not exhibit evidence of bioamplification (an increase in overall or species specific CFU’s over ambient values). Even removing the high level of Ascospores and Basidiospores noted outdoors there remains no evidence of bioamplification and evidence of good air filtration. No mold odor was noticeable during the sampling event.
GSE recommended cleaning the surface contamination resulting from condensation events with an antiseptic soap solution. We also recommended replacement of dirty or stained acoustical tiles. Dirty ceiling tiles and vents are associated with increased occupant mold complaints. Other than these minor notations the facility exhibited a high level of maintenance.
